Earlier this month St Jame’s House and the Royal British Legion hosted the official launch of ‘Cooking with Heroes’ as part of the centenary celebrations for the Legion. With over 350 guests gathered in the elegant setting of Claridges Hotel in the heart of Mayfair, the event was a great success.

Cooking with Heroes focuses on 100 regions in which the British Legion has been active over the past century, presenting 100 delicious recipes as well as profiles of 100 military heroes specific to each region including that of Odette Halllowes.

Odette Hallowes (nee Brailly, then Sansom) volunteered to help with the war effort in 1939. As a native French speaker with a knowledge of the country, she was recruited as a special agent in 1942, assisting the French Resistance. Odette was arrested by the Germans in April 1943 facing interrogation and torture at the hands of the concentration camp guards before the camp was liberated by the Allies. For her remarkable bravery she received a George Cross, a Legion of Honour and an MBE.

As part of its 100th Anniversary, I am honoured to have attended the Royal British Legion Launch Cooking With Heroes, a high end luxury cookbook that raises money for the Country’s largest military Charity. Written by serving and ex-serving personnel. This beautifully illustrated book includes contributions of sumptuous culinary delights and international cuisines to try yourself at home from classic to contemporary dishes. I’m so thrilled to be at the Claridges Hotel, London recently with the Royal British Legion to celebrate the launch of ‘Cooking with Heroes’ the official cookbook to mark the Legion’s 100th Centenary.

This Special Book is full of military history and regional dishes with recipes and stories from over 140 serving and ex-serving personnel, accompanied by Celebrity Chefs.

‘Cooking with Heroes’ Features a selection of dishes and recipes from celebrity and military chefs from around the world including Rick Stein, Cyrus Todiwala OBE DL, James Martin Jamie Oliver, Ainsley Harriot, Sophie Thompson, The Hairy Bikers and Melissa Hemsley. During the Press Launch I was also delighted to meet the Author Jon Pullen and Royal Editor-in-chief Robert Jobson whom I am so grateful to get my very own copy of the book signed by them to mark the special Anniversary for the 100 Centenary.

Westminster Abbey hosted a service to mark the centenary of the Royal British Legion. As part of their celebrations, St James House collaborated with them on their official centenary cookbook. ‘Cooking with Heroes’ features stories from a range of serving and ex-serving personnel from around the world. Here are just some of the inspiring people featured in the book from Odette Hallowes, Mohinder Singh Pujji, Sir Alfred Etienne Jerome du Puch and Edith Cavell.

Recipes with Kimchi were -re-created as amazing British Dishes by the amateur Chefs which was exciting to witness as I’m a huge fan of Oriental Culinary Dishes. Who isn’t a foodie at heart and sometimes I prefer to stay in and whip up my own culinary take out favourites in the kitchen at home.

Before the day concluded, The top 10 recipes were selected and lucky participants invited to the cook-off event to cook in person for the judges. If you watch Master Chef, then this will inspire you to have a go yourself and create your own recipes too. The winners were awarded £3,000.00, second place £2,000.00 and third place £1,000.00 with all participants being offered gifts sets worth £400.00.

I had a really pleasant evening and got to go inside one of the most iconic culinary schools in the World and when do you get an opportunity like this to experience culture through cuisine by aspiring Master Chefs. And the best part after the cook-off I got to meet the chefs, enjoy a cocktail and of course sample some Kimchi at Le Cordon Bleu’s restaurant CORD.

Known all over the world for the tradition and historicity of production, Vermouth di Torino is an aromatized wine born in the 18th century at the foot of the Alps and appreciated by the Royal Court of the Savoy.

Giulio Cocchi had the great idea of establishing authorized retailers where people could taste his products: sparkling winese, Barolo Chinato, Aperitivo Americano and a few distinct Vermouths. In 1913 there were seven Cocchi tasting Bars in Piermonte that soon became twelve.

Vermouth di Torino is known throughout the world for the tradition and history of its production. Its name is inextricably linked to Piedmont and Turin, where in the 1880s a real aristocracy of vermuttieri developed thanks to which, to different degrees and ways, the popularity of Turin Vermouth became international, reaching a great worldwide resonance. It’s a rare “evening vermouth” called Dopo Teatro on the wake of Piedmonts tradition to drink a small cup of cool vermouth with lemon zest in the evening, perhaps after watching a performance in one of the historic theatres of the Savoy capital.

Vermouth di Torino is a collective heritage of Piedmontese people. The Savoy dynasty, kings of Piedmont, was it’s first great promoter and since the end of XVIII century played a relevant role in the success of vermouth, generating flourishing industry which soon made Piedmont the veritable Kingdom of Vermouth.

Cocchi Americano is an aromatized wine created in 1891 by Giulio Cocchi and since then produced without interruption according to the original recipe. The name Americano is both due to the alcohol made bitter amaricato by the addition of herbs and spices and to the American habbit of drinking vermouth with ice and soda. I just found out that Vermouth is best served with cheese which is divine when paired together during Aperitivo.

Born in Piedmont in the last century, Barolo Chinato soon spread thanks to its refined taste, well balanced between bitter and sweet, and especially for the leading effect on the market of its name “ Barolo”, that immediately positioned it among the noblest products compared to various other types of alcoholic drinks based on cinchona. Spices, together with other aromatized wine, are at the heart of the Cocchi products. It is known a botanical library is used to collect the many herbs and spices to craft the original signature formulas by Giulio Cocchi

During its history, Cocchi has produced some variants to its Aperitivo Americano. The most recent is Cocchi Rosa produced with a based of red wines of Piedmont to which herbs and spices extracts are added in particular gentian, cinchona, citrus zest and rose petals. Today the winery still maintains its artisan character and follows the original recipes, formulated by Giulio Cocchi in 1891, to craft the distinctive wines that have made the Cocchi a cult name. Among the results of the last 30 years, defense of Barolo Chinato from forgetfulness and the re-launch of Vermouth di Torino since 2011 has been the driving force for the rebirth of the top of the range Vermouth di Torino on the international scene.

But the main highlight of this room had to be the fully equipped kitchen for all your culinary needs as a home away from home. As this stay was personal to me to switch off and relax, I did just that by taking a rain shower and pamper myself with Molton Brown toiletries before bed in the walk in marble tiled bathroom. But, most importantly I wanted to comment how clean the apartment was especially at present where this is essential more than ever before.

I’ve never felt so re-assured with contactless check in, mask, relaxed social distancing rules in ground floor restaurant and bar ‘Unwind’ Pop Up at the Hotel to a spotless Apartment with fresh remote for Smart TV. Rest-assured a lot of careful thought has gone into implementing a solid covid action plan on their website to ensure all guest feel confident they are always protected. This summer I told myself if I don’t go anywhere for vacation due to travel restrictions amidst the pandemic the idea of relaxing at home isn’t something I had considered until now. With that said, a summer staycation at home has been the most sensible option this year but don’t let that spoil your fun because there are ways to make the most of your open space including the back garden too.
