Ben Sherman’s modern, iconic mod look pays homage to 60’s style icons on the music scene
Just a bit of history for you, British musicians of the 1960’s were being influenced by Ivy league collegiate style influences from across the Atlantic. Get into the Summer mood and indulge in a love of Italian Scooters and French Hairstyles which inspired Spring Summer 2019.
It’s back to school with Ben Sherman and House of Holland as Ivy League and Retro Styles take centre stage to emulate sixties style icons on the music scene.
After all the excitement of yesterday’s shows during Day 1 of London Fashion Week Men’s I’m thrilled to see which Designers could raise the bar to showcase the latest trends for SS 2019. Just another two days to go.
Iconic checks and bold candy stripes were sophisticated as resort wear pieces to take you from beach to bar.
This season I was curious what Designers would be doing? Differentiating between uniqueness of each brand meant that it was hard to decide which shows to attend. You can’t do it all but if you can try and see as much as you can.
London’s always the place to discover new and upcoming talent. With that said, Ben Sherman never fails to disappoint with Henry Holland at the helm of the labels Creative Direction team. I can be assured to always expect an understated collection with edge paying homage to cool Britannia of the labels DNA.
An exciting blend of colour and prints takes centre stage for the new collection creating mod rock and roll style with preppy Ivy League looks as versatile pieces.
Firstly, let me mention the setting for staging this season’s catwalk show to my astonishment gave us a clue for expectations coming down the catwalk this afternoon. Could it be Ivy League perhaps?
The beautiful room housed in Middle Temple reminded me of a Preparatory School like something out of the Gossip Girl Series. I kid you not – was just like St Jude’s film set. It was reminiscent of the school assembly with church organs blaring out in a chapel as the first models emerged down the catwalk. We saw luxury sport’s wear inspired by Ivy League unisex pieces in classic silhouettes evoked young rock and roll icons.
Favourites include the iconic checks and bold candy stripe resort wear pieces to take you from beach to bar. Striking colour palettes such as cool blues were offset to contrast with hues of silver pink and tomato cream. In addition new signature colours Windsor Wine and Olive Oil make ideal summer statement pieces for vacation.

Who could forget the unforgettable brass band that marched the models out during the final walk to close the show. This finale paying homage to a very British Theme took guest by surprise as a real treat this afternoon. It was very regal indeed and the show was delightfully and immaculately presented. We just loved it!

Ben Sherman draws inspiration from London’s street style and rebellious spirit.
Ben Sherman the iconic British Menswear Brand collaborates with British Fashion Designer Henry Holland for their upcoming AW2018 capsule collection during London Fashion Week Men’s.
Henry Holland was recently named the Best Emerging Menswear Designer by the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards and renowned for his signature fashion forward design aesthetic.
The biannual celebration of British Menswear Style takes centre stage once again during London Fashion Week Men’s to showcase the very best in home grown design talent with international flair.
Vibrant colour with a youthful concept influenced by music history and street subcultures of the 70’s.
Here are just some of my favourite highlights and report of the latest designer men’s collections from the front row at shows to Trends and street style.
This season Holland injects his creative flair into Ben Sherman’s classic silhouettes to create contemporary dynamic pieces that evokes London’s street style and rebellious spirit.
Ben Sherman x House of Holland captures the heart of the Northern Soul Movement which dance is a key inspiration taken from a series of black and white images by acclaimed Photographer Brian Cannon commissioned by the band Oasis during their early career
It’s evident in the collection as the models came down the runway the emphasis of visual photography are applied on printed graphic tees, polo tops and shirts.
I’ll never forget the spectacular performance of Northern Soul Dancers who took to the catwalk which brought the iconic subculture to life with two step dance moves and the upbeat soundtrack with intervals during the show.
Clothing consists of retro badges, patchwork appliqué and wool shirts with soul pins keeping in line with the brands heritage classic mod DNA.
Retro badges, patchwork appliqué and wool shirts with soul pins were signature details in the collection.
Quirky Owl prints and striking pictorial imagery on knitwear evoked the weekend night owls drawn to the Northern Soul club scene dancing from dusk till dawn.

Creative Director Daniel Kearns and Brand partner David Beckham showcased their Spring Summer 2018 presentation during London Fashion Week Men’s where the show took place in a discreet courtyard on Floral Street Covent Garden.
The Spring Summer 2018 Kent & Curwen Collection takes inspiration from a moment in Britain’s Olympic History as supported by Brand Partner David Beckham proudly wearing the Union Jack on a new season red, white and blue rugby shirt.
Regatta stripes this season make their debut taken from the archive where swatch books of the thirties era were revived with uniqueness designed for Cambridge and Oxford Universities, prestigious rowing, cricket and tennis clubs to British Regiments.
It was known that each organisation had their own pattern that only team members were allowed to wear.
“British Heritage Menswear Brand from London”
Key signature pieces for Spring Summer 2018 included a tan woolen duffle coat true to the original. With every fine detail I really liked the coats cut in heavy melton that’s robust but soft to touch giving it that feeling of premium luxury.
Styling details in the collection drew inspiration from forties rowing kits
The duffle coat is finished with a toogle fastening with authentic wooden torpido toggles, hip pockets and a versatile hood to combat the British Weather. I’d say, worth investing in which is so ideal for chilly early spring season as a transition piece.
Kent & Curwen re-visits the Archive Swatch-books’ of the 1930’s
This season’s collection also makes me think about ‘Henley Royal Regatta’ as you’ll also want to covet accessories such as the versatile lambswool blanket scarf is the perfect finishing touch for breezy spring time. Styling details in the collection drew inspiration from Men’s forties rowing kits where the luxurious scarf is finished with pin-fringed ends and shows the Kent & Curwen signature nineteen twenty six rose emblem.
The new collection was inspired by teams as models gathered on a rostrum in front of guest reminiscent of a sporting team photograph accompanied by the soundtrack of 90’s indie mixed with new East London band Happiness. It felt almost like a trip down memory lane where models presented the heritage inspired sportswear collection on a catwalk fashioned like a vintage school sports hall. From that very brief moment it took me back to my school days as a young pupil was nostalgic indeed. Upstairs above the show space, imagery from the new collection hung in the space of an art instillation gallery style exhibition where invited guest were treated to indulge in scrumptious treats and refreshments inspired by the British Summertime. With set plans underway for the future of the British Fashion Label Kent and Curwen will open its first store under the Kearns / Beckham Partnership in the autumn which is exciting news.
Editorial Disclaimer: A huge thank you to Kent & Curwen for hosting me for the Press Preview during London Fashion Week Men’s. As always, all opinions are my own and I will never promote something I don’t personally use or would wear myself for accurate feedback.
